Alibag or Alibaug is a coastal town and a municipal council in Raigad District in the Konkan region of Maharashtra, India. It is headquarters of the Raigad district.

Alibag (also called Alibagh or Alibaugh) is an idyllic, peaceful town on the western coast of India (which is known as the Konkan region). It lies on almost the same latitude as the southern tip of Mumbai and is very close to this tip across the narrow strip of the Arabian Sea, conquerable by a ferry.

It is only 19 kms by sea situated at South of Mumbai port covered with Coconut , Areca trees and lush greenery. Nowadays, Alibag has become a very attractive tourist halt due to it's beautiful gardens planted with Coconut, Areca trees. It has a pleasant and pollution free atmosphere in addition to the beautiful Colaba fort. Earlier days gardens of Coconut and Areca trees were spread up from North to person named "Ali". City based on Ali's gardens was named as "Alibag".

Alibag has a beach in the city as well as there are nearabout 9 beaches around the city. Like other beaches on the Konkan coast, Alibag too has a historic fort, the Kulaba Fort, which is just off the main seashore.

History:

Alibag used to be the headquarters the great Maratha Admiral, Kanhoji Angre and has the famous Kolaba fort in the sea. Kanhoji Angre created the town of Alibag towards end of 17th century. Legend has it that a wealthy Muslim named Ali Owned many plantations, which gave the town the name Alibag.

Alibag is about 300 years old city.
Alibag was developed in the 17th century by Sarkhel Kanhoji Angre, the Naval chief of King Shivaji's kingdom.
Declared as a Taluka place in 1852.
Added four Talukas and Kulaba district was formed in 1869.
Many people used to call Alibag as Shribag. (Specially our Sanskrit teacher). Now they formed 'Shribag' as a part of Alibag. Some people used to mention Alibaug as 'Kulaba'.

You can do trekking nearby and have a great time. And if you are fond of sea food, then you cannot find a better place varieties in sea food, such as Pamphret, Prawns, Ravas, Crabs, Lobsters, Bombay ducks etc. which are fresh delicious and cheap.

Interesting things to Visit:

Mandwa & Kihim: Mandwa is a beautiful, untrodden beach. On a clear day one can enjoy a long, breathtaking view across the bay, up to the Gateway of India. Mandwa village too, has a charm of its own -- with its beautiful groves of coconut palms. You can plan an unusual tent holiday nearby at Kihim. Unspoilt and isolated, this beautiful place has a soothing effect on all city dwellers. For the nature lover, Kihim has a lot to offer: woods brimming with wild flowers and rare butterflies and birds.

Chaul: 15 kms from Alibag. A historic place with Portuguese ruins, Buddhist Caves, the Hamam Khana, a church, a temple and a synagogue.

Alibag beach : It is the main beach of the town. One can see the Kolaba fort from here. It is about 15 -20 minutes walk from Akshay Bungalow.

Nagaon beach : It is situated about 7 km away from Alibag. On the way to Nagaon you'll come across many 'Wadis' - Indian style farm houses with personal coconut and beetle nut gardens.

Kashid Beach : It is situated about 32 km away from Alibag, on the Alibag-Murud highway, it is one of the most beautiful and secluded beaches.Varsoli Beach:Located about a mile from the main beach, home to a very large naval base.

Akshi Beach: It is situated 5 km away from Alibag.

Nagaon beach: It is situated about 7 km away from Alibag and is famous for coconuts and betel nuts.

Kihim Beach: Kihim is a secluded place at a distance of 12 km from Alibag. The Kihim beach is famous for dense cover of Coconut trees. It is also famous for woods which are home to rare butterflies, birds and flowers.

Kolaba (or Kulaba) fort (Not to be confused with Colaba in Mumbai): Is situated in the sea at a distance of 1-2 km from the Alibag shores. During low tide one can walk to the fort.

Chaul: Is a historic town situated about 15 km away from Alibag. It is famous for its Portuguese ruins, an old church, a synagogue, Buddhist caves, the Hamam Khana and a temple.

Datta Mandir: situated at bhowale,2 km away from chaul.

Hingulja Mandir: Situated near datta mandir,historic temple built by pandwas.

Magnetic Observatory: Established in 1904 by the Indian Institute of Geomagnetism
